Field Study Course in Cheung Chau
The Caritas Chan Chun Ha Field Studies Centre offered our F.5 Geography students a half-day field study course in September. The course enriched their knowledge about the woodland environment and prepared them for the HKDSE ‘fieldwork-based questions (FBQ)’.
Planning and Preparation
Students familiarizing themselves with the fieldwork plan and the sampling methods
Data Collection
Placing a quadrat on a simulated site to measure the extent of the undergrowth
Measuring soil nutrients in terms of the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) levels
Using a light meter to measure the light intensity of a woodland
Using an abney level and a measuring tape to find out the height and width of trees
Visiting the Exhibition Centre
The course instructor simulating the effect of torrential rain on slope stability using a sandbox
Students experiencing the effect of constructing human structures on slope stability
A collection of various rock samples
Smuggled animal skin previously detained by the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department
