Visiting Information Days of Tertiary Institutions
Our school advocates early career planning. We hence encourage both our junior and senior students to visit the Information Days of various tertiary institutions so as to be equipped with the knowledge required to make informed decisions regarding their future academic choices in line with their interests and aspirations. Not only do they gain insights into university life, but they also have the opportunity to interact with faculty members and current undergraduates. These visits further motivate our students to pursue their study goals and they are excited to share their explorations with teachers.

Inter-Class Debate Competitions: A Showcase of Eloquence and Critical Thinking
Two inter-class debate competitions were successfully held during lunchtime recently, featuring engaging motions that sparked lively discussions among the participating students.
The first motion, Mid-Autumn Festival should become a holiday, explored the significance of this traditional festival and its potential as a public holiday. Students presented persuasive arguments, delving into aspects like cultural importance, family reunions, and the celebration of Chinese heritage.
The second motion took a creative turn, setting foot in the world of popular animation with the topic Doraemon shouldn’t take Nobi back to the past to rectify his mistakes. This debate provided a platform for students to ponder the ethics of time travel and its possible impacts on life’s natural course.
These debates not only offered an opportunity for students to express their opinions but also enhanced their public speaking, critical thinking and teamwork skills. It was encouraging to see the enthusiasm and passion with which our students approached these topics, fostering a vibrant academic environment within our school community.

To align with the “Enhanced My Pledge to Act Funding Programme” of Quality Education Fund, our school’s Moral, Civic and National Education Section collaborated with our Music Department in arranging for F.1 students to participate in the “Tea House Student Matinees Scheme” on 19 October 2023. Specially devised for primary and secondary school students, the scheme extends arts learning beyond the classroom and allows students to experience Xiqu and traditional Chinese culture in a stimulating, inter-disciplinary way and get a taste of well-designed opera performances. Through the host’s in-depth explanations in simple terms and a series of demonstrations together with newly compiled short plays and interactive sessions, students better understood the Chinese cultural values conveyed in opera stories, which helps cultivate positive education. |

45th Athletic Meet
Our 45th Athletic Meet was held at Sham Shui Po Sports Ground on 4 and 5 October 2023. It was a memorable occasion for us. All teachers and students actively and enthusiastically took part on both days despite the scorching weather.
There were over 1000 entries this year, amounting to 20% more than last year. Apart from their keen participation in track and field events, our students strived for their best performance in the inter-house, inter-class and inter-society competitions too. Our House Committees spiced up the scene with creative and beautiful props and decorations, while the cheering teams demonstrated great support for their housemates. The Athletic Meet was not only about competing and winning, but also about sportsmanship, teamwork and diligence which are lifelong virtues to uphold.
Clubs and Societies were invited to wear representative costumes to join the Inter-society Relay with a brief introduction by our English Ambassadors. It was truly spectacular and everyone had a great time.
Our thanks go to Mr Leung Kwok Shing, Executive Director of Hok Yau Club, for joining us as our guest of honor and giving an inspiring speech. Mr Leung was awarded Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service in 2022 and is certainly an excellent role model for our students.

Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration 2023
To celebrate the bliss of togetherness and in line with our major concern to cultivate a positive vibe in school and create joyful moments for our students, our Chinese, English, Visual Arts and Music Departments organised various stall games during lunchtime at Mid-Autumn Festival.
Apart from lantern riddles, lantern painting and origami which everyone enjoyed, we also had a mooncake and fruit sharing time especially for our non-Chinese students as an opportunity for them to experience and appreciate our Chinese culture which is an important element of values education encompassing care and love for others while nurturing our sense of national identity.
The instrumental performance of Guzheng solo as well as the festive music hyped up the atmosphere. Besides, we played Putonghua songs and had an English debate session related to the festival, which echoed our major concern to foster biliteracy and trilingualism among students.
Finally, students and teachers had a great time taking pictures at our school hall entrance adorned with lantern and rabbit decorations. It was a fun day full of warmth and joy

Form 1 Bridging Programme – Embarking on an Exciting Path of Learning and Adventure
We are thrilled to share the success of our recently concluded Form 1 Bridging Programme, which aimed to provide our Form 1 students with a smooth transition into secondary school life while enhancing their English language proficiency.
The programme kicked off with engaging lessons in various subjects all conducted in English. Students had the opportunity to get a taste of their coming lessons while sharpening their English language skills at the same time.
One of the highlights of the programme was the English Fun Day. Native English-speaking teachers conducted interactive activities and games in classrooms and the school hall. The atmosphere was electric and students were well engaged. Not only did the fun day help enhance their language skills, but it also created an enjoyable and inclusive environment for everyone involved.

Furthermore, our dedicated counselling prefects offered a campus tour introducing our school’s facilities and resources, helping our new students feel more at home in the new environment. Additionally, a series of mass games, encouraging teamwork and a sense of belonging, were organized.

The pinnacle of our Form 1 Bridging Programme was the Growth Day Camp at Pak Heung. Students had an off-campus adventure with team-building games, an exciting room escape experience, and the exhilaration of abseiling. Apart from providing a platform to develop students’ leadership skills, the camp also allowed them to step out of their comfort zone, fostering their personal growth as well as resilience.

The Bridging Programme was a resounding success thanks to our students’ keen participation. We have high hopes for their future endeavors, and look forward to their soaring to new heights.
A Journey to Explore the Advanced Science and Technology in our Motherland
Three students from our school participated in a journey to explore the advanced science and technology in our motherland (祖國尖端科技之旅) from 15 July to 22 July 2023. During the tour, they visited the cutting-edge science and technology sectors such as aerospace, new energy, new materials, intelligent manufacturing, water conservancy and eco-engineering, etc. in the capital city of Beijing and in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and interacted with students of Tsinghua University to learn more about our country’s latest development and strengthen their national identity.

Water Race in Wong Tai Shan
Our Geography and English Departments jointly organized a water race on our school campus during the post-exam period in July. F1 and F2 students were divided into nearly 50 groups, with a mission to find the 30 checkpoints from the school library at the basement up to the special rooms on the top floor.
At each checkpoint, they had to answer one question related to water footprint or water use in their daily lives, such as its consumption in a set meal with 1 slice of pork (150g), 1 bowl of rice (200g), and 1 cup of lemon tea (20g lemon).
A popcorn machine was also stationed at our school hall, where extended readings were displayed by our STEM Department on the role of water in the making of popcorn. Our students were surprised that popcorn kernels contain 10% to 20% water. Once the water inside is heated up, it vaporizes, resulting in pressure that is high enough for the kernels to burst into butterfly/mushroom-shaped popcorn.
Our students were shown clips from the film Ratatouille while the marks were counted. Lastly, Our Principal Ms Chiu presented the certificates to the winning teams, the winning classes and their class teachers. The event rounded up with a group photo and we pledged to save our precious water resources for the sake of our next generation.

Environmental Education Programme in Fanling
This Environmental Education Programme, co-organized by three of our subject departments as a large-scale, school-based field study for 60 of our F4 and F5 Geography, Biology and Chemistry students, was conducted in Hok Tau, the upper course of Ng Tung River on 6 July 2023.
Upon arriving at the site, students were briefed about the physical environment of the sampling area and taught both the traditional and current ways to measure fluvial characteristics and sediment size. After conducting a biological survey for fast-moving organisms and another similar survey using a quadrat, they proceeded to measure dissolved oxygen level and pH values of the water. An interdisciplinary school-based guide was provided to highlight the fieldwork plan with space for students to record their findings.
We believe such hands-on experience can help enhance students’ fieldwork skills required in the 3 DSE subjects as well as their generic skills such as collaboration and problem-solving.
